Frontier Mining Camps & Ghost Towns

They came west – daring pioneers, men and women, who left their families and homes to cross a continent in search of gold. To reach the new territory, they braved remote and desolate country not without its deprivations and hardships. In the wild country, between the Mojave Desert and the crest of the Sierra Nevada, some found gold, while others found a life unlike anything they had ever known. This is their story.

In the early 1920’s, young L. Burr Belden wandered Death Valley as a reporter for the San Bernardino Sun- Telegram. He befriended the old-timers who shared with him their stories and memories of Death Valley’s colorful mining days. Belden made the Death Valley area a field of intense personal study and research. He loved all that had to do with Death Valley – its history, its landscape, its people. Belden was to spend his entire career at the Sun-Telegram, and was later appointed by two California governors to serve on both the California History Commission and Conference of California Historical Societies.
