Haunted Hotels is a guidebook describing a selection of the best hotels and inns in the United States and Canada. Each offers good value and an enjoyable stay. Each has a little something extra...ghosts. In Alabama's majestic Kendall Manor, southern hospitality sometimes appears in the floating form of Annie, a nineteenth-century nursemaid, who always "kept an eagle eye on the children in her care." Silas, the night watchman at Maine's Kennebunk Inn, died of a heart attack in the 1960's, but still levitates beer mugs, knocks on the wall, and has even been blamed for the collapse of a honeymoon couple's bed. Visitors to California's Gingerbread mansion inn, formerly a doctor's residence and later a hospital, sometimes encounter a pair of mischievous Victorian children who move pictures and push guests on the thirteenth step of the main staircase. Anybody can stay at a famous hotel listed in a standard guidebook. Travel writer Robin Mead suggests spending some time in one of the more than one hundred inns listed here. The haunted hotels, he says, "were all fun places to stay and never scary. The ghosts are a convivial crew: regularly romantic, sometimes sad, and frequently funny."
